Greyson Perry

In our lecture we spoke about Greyson Perry, a British artist who is also a writer and broadcaster. Grayson Perry: 'What's gone wrong with men?'

Something I realized was Perry uses a wide variety of artworks and media. His fame first begun with ceramics. His ceramics were known for being very unique as he would only produce one of each which made them very valuable. Perry also created paintings, tapestries, and even a television series.

Perry is a transvestite and has a feminine alter ego named Claire. Further exploring his transvestism, he made his first television series called "Why Men Wear Dresses" in 2005. This also grew his popularity. He is also very confident in this part of himself and tries to make it more known and normal and I feel like he could be a good inspiration for other men like him.

Greysons approach to his work is very provocative, expressive, and also a bit exciting! His work can also seem very humorous and unique.

I also find his work a bit childish as he incorporates in a lot of his work, a teddy bear that he has had since he was young and he uses this teddy bear as a character in a alot of his works. He is very inspired by his childhood and ways that his mother effected it. It seems his approach to his work is to not think so much about it and just to do what first comes to mind. This is often a challenge I feel for more artists to achieve because often putting expressions or feeling and thoughts into art can be more easier said than done. I see this as a great strength that he has.

His work really clings to the theme or expressionism because in most of Perrys work, there is a message being displayed. More in his early work was when he created more autobiographic work where his art was mostly about him and his experiences as a child, but in his more recent days he expresses more social issues like politics, identity, education, and gender.

  1. Decent effort here Ciani, but would like to hear if anything in Perry's influences or outcomes has any links to your work?

Remember to include references in your posts as this is part of your marking criteria at the end of the term.

  2. No posts since the end of January, we are now in Week 6 and 7 posts is unacceptable for a project of this nature. Firstly, follow up on your Sign Off sheet and post what you discussed with Zoe there. Secondly, there is so little evidence of your project development that it is hard to see what you are doing exactly. We can discuss your progress in class, but it is essential that you attend your tutorial with Zoe this week.

Please post your plan, skills week work, development ideas and independent research on here. Using your blog consistently is in your marking criteria. The blog is 70% of the mark this term, Art Portfolio is a must pass module worth 36 credits, you need 120 for DMU. Coupled with your slow progress on 2D 3D, if there is not evidence of better engagement on here and instagram, you are endangering your progress to DMU in October.

  3. As above it is the middle of February and I am seeing no work for your project - you will not pass this module unless you start posting work
